Scuba gear helps divers accomplish difficult tasks such as underwater construction, sunken-ship excavations, and rigging water-polo tournaments. Gain a specialty skill set with today's Groupon: for $15, you get a scuba-diving lesson at The Dive Shop of Memphis (a $50 value).

The Dive Shop's crew of certified instructors guides eager divers through three-hour lessons held in the depths of their heated indoor pool. Try Scuba lessons rattle off the greatest hits of scuba preparation and maintenance in a one-on-one exchange with a dive leader. Classes include an overview that highlights the role each piece of equipment plays in the underwater oxygen cycle, as well as important tasks divers must perform, such as equalizing pressure, adjusting harnesses, and tipping crustacean jazz bands. Once ready for submersion, soon-to-be-divers take to the facility's warm pool for 1–2 hours of diving instruction to practice moving through the water and get acclimated to the sensation of breathing underwater. Upon completion, students receive a Try Scuba certificate that allows them to take more advanced lessons or enroll in any mer-person college.

About The Dive Shop

The Dive Shop's instructors, drawing from Scuba Schools International's programs, teach water-safety skills to fledgling divers and swimmers of all ages. Classes and activities range from the Scuba Rangers club—where kids aged 8–12 learn to snorkel and scuba dive from the safety of a pool—to open-water dives, swimming lessons, and more advanced stress-and-rescue dive sessions, during which instructors turn dog paddlers into almost-mermaids, minus the pet octopuses.
