Creative talents, like houseplants and celebrities, wilt without proper attention. Spark artistic brushwood with today's Groupon: for $10, you get $20 worth of paint-it-yourself pottery, mosaic, and glass fusing at The Fire in Appleton.
The Fire combats artistic snobbery with an all-inclusive array of creative building blocks. Inside the studio’s downtown location, rows of paints and unfinished ceramic pieces line countertops, and an old-fashioned television set leisurely recounts its favorite Lone Ranger episodes. Large work surfaces and a play place for kids ensure that both children and adults have room to take creative risks. Cavalier creators can paint pottery, craft mosaics, or cobble together a transparent 10-gallon hat with glass fusing (the average project is between $10.99 and $25.99). Pottery painters select their objects from a selection of plates, platters, and other decorative items, then begin painting with the help of a color consultant.
Mosaic-creating artisans, meanwhile, use small pieces of multicolored glass to cover common household objects or antique books that need sprucing up. Once fully garbed, mosaics may be grouted at home, in the studio at a later date, or by one of The Fire's grouting gurus for an additional 20% of the cost of the mosaic. Crafters opting to work on glass-fused items commence with a flat piece of glass, glue additional pieces of glass on top, and then fuse the pieces together using group telekinesis. Pottery and fused glass both require seven days to ripen after being fired and fused, after which proud parents may take their creations home.
