Backyard baseball games have long been haunted by ghost runners, who disrupt the festivities by taunting the pitcher with banshee wails to the tune of Gary Glitter songs. Better know these sport-sabotaging specters with today's Groupon to The Haunted Cottage, located in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Choose from two options:

  • For $10, you get a two-hour tour (a $20 value).
  • For $40, you get an overnight ghost hunt (an $80 value).

The Haunted Cottage earns its creepy credentials not only by being one of the nation's premier training facilities for paranormal researchers, but also by being housed in the supposed former residence of assassin John Wilkes Booth. Located in Harpers Ferry, the site of John Brown's 1859 raid on a federal armory, The Haunted Cottage, also known as the Booth House, opens its doors to lovers of history and hauntings with a number of tours exploring the area's apparitions and the origins of modern paranormal research.

On the two-hour tour, guests will enjoy a grand tour of The Haunted Cottage, with access to the National Paranormal History Museum and the paranormal library, both located on the premises. Delve into the early days of talcum-powder-and-flashlight-assisted ghost hunting, or peruse the library's more than 300 books, chockfull of spooky tables of contents and eerie footnotes. Tour-takers will also hear the ghost tales of the Booth House and partake in basic paranormal research training, even getting to use real research equipment such as EMF meters, thermal sensors, and butterfly nets.

On the overnight ghost hunt, guests will spend a night investigating the Booth House. As evening creeps over Harpers Ferry like ink spilled onto a plate of pancakes, Venkmans-in-training will learn the haunted history of Harpers Ferry before touring the house. EVP experiments (capturing spirits' voices) will be conducted, as well as video vigils of the house's slave quarters, bedrooms, and cellar. Just before dawn rears its ugly head, ghost hunters will take EMF readings and temperature tabulations, and then gather at 6 a.m. to go over research findings. Coffee will be provided for those who aren't kept awake by the adrenaline rush of poltergeist poaching.

The Haunted Cottage traditionally requires a minimum of four people for its tours and overnight ghost hunts; that policy has been eerily erased for Groupon purchasers. Gather a fellow phantom fanatic and hit The Haunted Cottage for chills and thrills not related to malfunctioning air-conditioning units.

About The Haunted Cottage

Though spectral forms and shadowy figures still reside in The Haunted Cottage, its greatest legacy is as the occasional vacation home of assassin John Wilkes Booth. Also known as the Booth House, The Haunted Cottage is home to paranormal researcher Vince Wilson, who helms the haunted abode's ghost tours and maintains the paranormal library and history museum, where guests can spy a vampire skeleton among other supernatural exhibits. All this knowledge pours from Vince's mouth during tours and investigations, which pair breakdowns of the house's 200-year history with actual equipment designed to catch ghosts, from cameras and digital recorders to EMF meters.

The Haunted Cottage also strives to school spirit-seekers with paranormal-research training that cycles through parapsychology topics such as extrasensory perception, hypnosis, and psychic healing.
