Nightclubs got their start when cavemen began wandering into the darkness clubbing any shadowy dinosaur, fellow caveman, or nine-pound mosquito that got in their way. Today's Groupon exemplifies the peak evolution of the club scene: for $20, you get $40 worth of drinks, plus admission for four (up to an $80 value, depending on the night) at Tongue & Groove, up to a $120 total value. The drinks come in the form of four drink tickets that can be redeemed for thirst quenchers at the bar, or torn into pieces of regrettable confetti.
After its original location disappeared, then mysteriously reppeared in an Idaho cornfield, Tongue & Groove relocated into its current two-floor, 8,600-square-foot facility in 2007, quickly becoming the orange-upholstered nerve center of Atlanta nightlife. Since the original location's opening in 1994, Nightlife wizards Michael Krohngold and Scott Strumlauf have meticulously crafted Tongue & Groove into a club that is simultaneously classy and wild. By offering complimentary valet service, patrons are left feeling as pampered as a C-list sitcom star, or, at the very least, a celebrity magician with an abrasive haircut.
Each night inside the lively confines offers a different theme, creating a constantly evolving scene. The overflowing passion of Wednesday's Latin Elegance Night has helped it become the hottest Latin dance night in town. Tongue & Groove's trademark night, Thursday's Southern Hospitality, serves up a pleasantly eclectic soundtrack of pop, rock mash-ups, house, and hip-hop as big shots from Atlanta's restaurant, bar, and nightclub industry discuss how to get people hooked on Zima again. Friday's Rhythm and Groove has DJ Jamal spinning the best of old- and new-school pop and rock, while New Groove Saturdays blasts a backdrop of current dance music as seasoned couples and saucy singles mingle. On Icon Mondays hip-hop dominates the night and ladies are granted free entry till 11:30 p.m.
Must be 21 or older and comply with each night's dress code. Not available for holidays or private parties.
