A recently discovered alternative to the indoors, going "outside" offers adventurous explorers exposure to things such as wind, sunshine, and the naturally occurring mazes found in corn fields. Leave the indoors with today's Groupon: for $25, you get $50 worth of outdoor goods, apparel, and more at Uncle Lem's Mountain Outfitters located on Kingston Pike. This Groupon cannot be used on sale items and, if more than 500 Groupons are sold, your voucher will be worth $60.

Uncle Lem's Mountain Outfitters offers a wide selection of outdoor gear and apparel from brands such as Patagonia and North Face. Charge up a black diamond or gently sloping city street with all the essentials packed inside an Osprey Talon 22 daypack ($99). Equip yourself with a North Face Denali Jacket ($165) and a MSR Pocket Rocket camp stove ($39.95) to help keep campsites warm and facilitate excessive ramen noodles consumption. Trailblazing torsos can gear up with Patagonia Re-Tool Snap-Ts ($119) and Isis Sultana Vests ($99) before resting comfortably on Therm-a-Rest Trail Lite sleeping pads ($59.95) after a long day of karate chopping uprooted trees into firewood. Uncle Lem’s also carries an assortment of backpacks, sleeping bags, and tents as well as flip-flops, hiking boots, and boat shoes for outdoorsy fashion shows.

Owners and brothers Lee and Kevin Hill named the store after their great-great-uncle Lem Ownby, the last resident of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The shop’s rugged interior is a shrine to the old mountain man, having been built from reclaimed barn wood from a family farm.

Reviews

Although Uncle Lem's Mountain Outfitters is a new business and doesn't have many online reviews, it has been featured in local press including the Knoxville News-Sentinel and WBIR.com.

  • "We would like Uncle Lem to become a regional icon people feel connected to," Hill said. "We are trying to create an experience akin to the time, era and personality of Uncle Lem." – Carly Harrington, Knoxville News-Sentinel
  • Of course, keeping with family tradition, the store offers their great, great uncle's famous good. "We sell honey just like Uncle Lem did... local honey produced here in East Tenneesse [sic]. As the old timers say, it's good for what ails you." – Beth Haynes, WBIR.com
