In addition to a sure-fire self-defense mechanism, a well-formed karate chop serves as a tool for slicing blocks of cheese at a dinner party and keeping solid-brick houseguests from stepping out of line. Turn hands into convenient culinary weapons with today’s Groupon: for $72, you get one month of classes with a provided uniform at Unity Martial Arts (a $145 value).
Unity Martial Arts serves as the area’s primary training grounds for Cuong Nhu, a high-caliber style of martial arts designed for fighters of all ages. Cuong Nhu blends hard styles, in which students generate force into a target, with soft styles, in which the student takes another’s force, directs it away, and bottles it for future consumption. With a packed schedule of daily classes, students can participate in up to 16 sessions each month. Each session begins with stretching and physical conditioning and progresses into technique instruction from sensei Tanner Critz, who has nearly 30 years of martial-arts experience. In addition to improving strength, agility, and endurance, Cuong Nhu also provides three-part self-defense training that fortifies bodies in the absence of a moat.
Unity Martial Arts will provide senseis-in-training with a uniform to wear during their month of classes. In their journey toward a black belt, students can customize their training as they advance, forming meaningful relationships with classmates as they roundhouse kick weakness in the face.
