Towering above San Francisco Bay, the USS Hornet Museum commemorates the 200-year legacy amassed by this legendary aircraft carrier through an eye-fetching array of preserved naval exhibits and guided tours. A major player in both World War II and the Apollo 11 and 12 recovery missions, the USS Hornet has a remarkable history that unfolds across numerous exhibits placed across the ship. Take a self-guided jaunt across the Hornet's epic hangar deck, or nab an informed docent to navigate the ladders and low overheads of the subterranean lower decks, which covers the ship's brig, engine room, and makeshift Jeopardy set. Sightseers can gaze upon the Bay's picturesque vistas from the gear-laden flight deck before proudly saluting the carrier's fleet of antique propeller aircrafts, jets, and helicopters.

Out-of-this-world artifacts from the Apollo space missions pique nostrils with the fading scent of stardust, and an onboard flight simulator recreates a Desert Storm seek-and-destroy mission ($6 for a single ride, not included in today's Groupon).
