Tour the garden to see towering rainforest trees with tall curving roots that grow near bronze mermaids, a grove of swaying golden bamboo, a cut-flower garden, and tropical fruit trees. Here the focus is on landscape design, but among the plantings are botanically important species of the tropics, including varieties of palms, ki (ti), heliconias, and gingers.
Nestled in the stunning Lawai Valley, Allerton Garden as we know it today has a rich history of philanthropy, art, and botanical curiosity that begins with Robert Allerton.
Robert was an aspiring artist, a philanthropist, and “the richest bachelor in Chicago,” but it wasn’t until he became an amateur landscape architect that he discovered his life’s purpose – to become a patron of the arts. In 1938 Robert purchased 83 acres of the valley with his lifetime companion and adopted son John Gregg, and created his garden paradise.
