Sally’s knowledge of the cemetery history and symbolism was amazing. Her in depth research of the various stories behind the graves and some of the people in the vaults brought the history of New Orleans to life. For example, the Shelly castle mausoleum.

Local award-winning author and historian Sally Asher will take you on a tour of a famous New Orleans cemetery that she wrote about her in book "Stories from the St. Louis Cemeteries of New Orleans." On this walking tour, you'll learn about burial practices, types of tombs, and visit the graves of some of the city's notable (and notorious) citizens including the hunchbacked photographer who secretly photographed prostitutes, the woman behind the quirky castle, the famed architect whose ship went down with over a 100 prostitutes and circus performers, and legendary chefs who collectively advanced the Civil Rights movement, restored horse racing in the city, and (for better or worse) introduced the turducken to the U.S. The tour takes an 1:15 and is under a mile. Sally is passionate about revealing New Orleans' unusual, outrageous, and untold stories, believing history isn’t about merely listing dates and facts, but the gentle collision of truth and narrative – scandals and all!

Sally is fantastic! She is knowledgeable and answered all our questions! My kids (18-26) said this was their favorite tour, too. I can’t wait to buy her books!

Sally is a phenomenal tour guide. She is incredibly thorough and has thoughtfully researched all the stories and information she shares to make sure it's as accurate as possible, updating her stories as new information comes to light. She is incredibly plugged into the New Orleans cemetery community, and has done hundreds of hours of interviews with grave diggers, church staff, funeral staff, and the like for her books that she uses to inform her story-telling so it's both interesting and accurate. If you want to know about the hows and whys of New Orleans Cemeteries as well as the stories of the local "celebrities" who are interred there, this tour is a must! Some logistical things to note - it's a walking/standing tour, and there is no place to put down bags during the tour, so if you are, like us, coming from the Art Museum

Sally’s tour was so informative! She provided excellent information about available parking, Uber and streetcar. It was easy to find her at the cemetery. Her extensive research with the NOLA archdiocese, cemetery workers and local community members as well as travels to study in Paris shine throughout the tour. Intriguing tour. When the tour was over she recommended a neighborhood lunch spot 5 minutes away that was perfect for etouffe and gumbo. Sally’s tour is well worth the time and cost!
