Winston Churchill was famous for the high standards he applied to alcohol, quipping that "Liquor is quicker, but get me a single malt scotch with moon rocks in it! I'm the English president!" Be like Ol' Winnie with today's Groupon: for $15, you get $30 worth of pub fare and drinks at Westport Flea Market.
Formerly a flea market whose booths once contained an infamous K.C. serial killer, Westport Flea Market has elaborated on its colorful history with a menu of hearty burgers and pub grub, as well as 44 beers on tap. A starter of titanic nachos ($7.99) is heavy enough to double as its own ender, but savvy diners will save stomach space for the famous flea market burger ($7.99), made out of 10 ounces of ground chuck from McGonigle's. Equally hand-holdable and mouth-moisturizing is Joe Joe's famous chicken Panini ($7.99), which dresses the chicken in three kinds of cheese, caramelized onions, and roasted red peppers on foccacia bread. All foods are ordered at the bar counter, then passed to you through a window by either a boisterous chef or smart-mouthed hand puppet.
Once you've grabbed your grub and a seat, a Flea Market server will keep you stocked with frothy flagons from the bar, whose taps unleash thundering waterfalls of Flying Monkey Amber Ale, Shocktop Belgian Wheat, Boulevard Lunar Ale, and many more. As you wander through the cash-only libationery's labyrinthine layout, you might find yourself bumping into local celebrities, Mayor Mark Funkhouser (who celebrated his election here), or drunk minotaurs. The Westport Flea Market's regular line-up of live music and events draws a different flavor of crowd every night. Engage in high-stakes staring contests during Sunday's Texas Hold 'em, show off your throat-singing skills during the live karaoke, or find your checkmating soulmate during chess club on Tuesdays.
Reviews
Westport Flea Market was featured on Food Network's Meat & Potatoes. 87% of more than 370 Urbanspooners like the restaurant. Citysearchers and 52 Yelpers give it an average of four stars:
- I have been the the flea market many times now. The burgers are always great (can't get myself to ever order anything else). It's such a strange place to go--being surrounded by a dingy flea market--but it's always a lot of fun to take my friends from out of town. – kv, Urbanspoon
- I think this is the best place in town for burgers although the other night I went out of a limb and ordered the Reuben. It was unbelievable. The meat was tender and the bread was grilled to perfection…Great night -- good food -- cold beer -- doesn't get much better than that. – tagolfgolf, Citysearch

About Westport Flea Market
When Joe Zwillenberg bought Westport Flea Market Bar & Grill, he preserved "an irreplaceable piece of the city's character," according to the Pitch, which dubbed him Kansas City's Best Local Hero in 2006. Thanks to Joe, the close to 30-year-old establishment—which had been marked for takeover by a national chain—is still churning out its famous 10-ounce burgers today. Made with ground Prime cuts of Kansas City strip steak and fillet from McGonigle's Market, the hearty handhelds earned CityVoter's Best Burger awards in 2008 and 2009 and were featured on Food Network's Meat & Potatoes in 2010. Diners can customize each time-honored patty with onions, pickles, or shredded historical documents from the condiments table.
The eatery—which is nestled within a bustling flea market—also offers 44 beers on tap, live music, and a game room with pool tables, foosball, and an arcade. It is also the home of the Tiger Club of Kansas City's weekly luncheons, which boast high-profile speakers from the world of sports.
