About Whydah Pirate Museum
In the early 1700s, the pirate Black Sam Bellamy sailed the Whydah across the Caribbean. He plundered treasures from more than 50 ships, then set off with them all to New England. That's where he met his demise on April 26, 1717, when a violent nor'easter sent Black Sam, his ship, and all its pirate loot to the bottom of the sea. The shipwreck was recovered nearly 300 years later, allowing museum visitors an up-close-and-personal look at pirate life.
