At the two-day Willcox Wine Country Fall Festival, 13 local wineries fill outstretched goblets with sips of varietals amid the lilting notes of folk and bluegrass bands. Each festival pass places a commemorative glass in your hand for tasting up to six Arizona wines or placing over one eye to prevent hummingbirds from trying to suck the nectar from your iris. Pair wine-flushed cheeks with the strawberries-and-cream notes of Sand-Reckoner Vineyards’ rosé, or tipple spicy sips of Carlson Creek Vineyard’s syrah. Other participating vineyards include Gallifant Cellars, Jerome Winery, and Keeling-Schaefer Vineyards. Bluegrass twangs dominate the stage Saturday with the banjo stylings of Silver Thread Trio, followed on Sunday by folksy melodies from Nowhere Man and a Whiskey Girl. Representatives from the Dragoon Market and Cafe set succulent bites afloat on the veritable sea of sprits with handcrafted cheese, fruit, and chocolate plates and fresh-made burritos available for purchase.
After a day full of sips and sounds, guests can retire to their room at Quality Inn Willcox, where they can snuggle into soft pillows to dream of wine-filled fountains, or they can install a wine fountain in their mouths with four bottles of finely fermented Arizona varietals hand-selected by local oenologists.
