About Winterhaven Festival of Lights

The Winterhaven Festival of Lights began in 1949 when CB Richards wanted to create a holiday-inspired event after visiting a similar one in Beverly Hills, CA in the 1930's. After purchasing sets of Christmas lights and Aleppo pines from a local nursery, Richards planted the pines at intervals throughout the neighborhood and had electrical connections installed near each tree. A tree decorating contest was born and he personally judged all the displays for many years, and the winner was awarded $100.

These days, the Winterhaven Festival of Lights promotes giving to those who are less fortunate, green energy in motion, and Winterhaven Wagon rides pulled by propane-powered historic Jeeps. The tour lasts approximately 40 minutes and the proceeds go toward keeping this long-standing, excellent family tradition alive. Guests to this event have the option of donating to the Tucson Food Bank with non-perishable, unexpired foods.
