Families head to YMCA Camp Nissokone for a seven-day, six-night vacation. There, they tote along their own bedding and towels to their private cabins, each equipped with its own bathroom. Campers don't have to worry about meals, as Camp Nissokone serves three squares a day and accommodates special dietary requirements. That leaves plenty of time for nature-based fun. The camp encompasses 200 acres and a half-mile of shore on Lake Van Etten. Visitors can add on activities such as horseback riding, paintball, and canoeing on the Ausable River to their trips, or venture to the nearby town of Oscoda. During the session that begins June 29, the camp will celebrate its 100th birthday with fireworks.

About YMCA Camps
It's one of the central rituals of youth: summer camp. No child should be deprived of the joys of canoeing under an open sky, sleeping in a rustic cabin, telling stories around a campfire, and spit-taking at a lonely sasquatch gazing mournfully from the forest. That's why the YMCA runs two camps in eastern Michigan. Just an hour from downtown Detroit sits Camp Ohiyesa, located on the edge of Fish Lake in the middle of lush farmland. And at Camp Nissokone, 170 acres of lakefront campground offers everything from horse riding to wakeboarding to arts and crafts.
