Quaint 1890's old Hotel The General Palmer is a nice small hotel. Staff was very courteous & helpful, desk clerk took my bags to my room. There is no restaurant or bar in the hotel itself, but plenty of other places within a block. My only issues was the elevator, I am 82, it was probably circa 1920's. Heavy metal door, open the door, have to pull back the folding metal gate, very tough to pull back while simultaneously trying not to let the heavy metal door slam into you. The elevator floor would not always exactly align with the floor of the outside, had to be careful not to trip. I mentioned it to them, they sort of said, "it's part of the charm". A block from the train station, lovely huge back balcony with view of the trains & surrounding mountains. Except for the elevator, an A rating from me.

Return Visit We have stayed numerous times at the General Palmer. We love historic hotels and this one is definitely historic. We had and issue with our air conditioning but management took care of us. Staff was great even during times of short staff.

upsetting The bed is a king size bed & couch is comfy! Nice size rooms. They have a coffee maker with 4reg, 4 decaf coffee k cups, assorted sugar, 2 cups, and 4 creamers. It takes a long time for the hot water to make it to second floor. You can only get one channel on the tv, and there is a whinny noise from the air conditioner that is from morning until night around 7:00am -10:00 pm. It is very annoying! Overall, not too bad…

Three cheers for the General! Coming back from a costumed burros race(see pix) in Mancos, Co I wanted to stay in the Strater hotel, but it's booked and this is my other choice. I had vague distant memories of a dark and dusty place I slept in years ago. This time I am pleasantly surprised: the hotel has been spiffed up and features completely renovated bathrooms (I cannot even imagine how they managed to bring so much water pressure in the shower in a building that old), clean and unique rooms, and friendly service. It’s very stylish, so, Victorian fans, this is your place to stay! Time to reinstate breakfast, for which you are paying but which you are not getting.

Wrong hotel in Durango. Made the mistake of booking the wrong historic hotel in Durango. Way overpaid for a cheap knock off. Had to leave the hotel, walk across the parking lot, climb 2 flights of stairs to get to the “palace” suites. Nothing more that a concrete building. “Suite” was very small with cheap reproduction furniture from 1990s. Cheap spring mattress and overly worn bedding. Floors were dirty. Bathroom was clean. 3 tv channels and WiFi was out. Also, right on the Durango/Silverton railway station. So, if you’re not a morning person, not a good location. “Due to Covid restrictions”, still serving muffin and apple in a bag. _ Ridiculous when every restaurant is open! Maybe the rooms actually in the hotel are nice. The extremely overpriced “upgrade” is a joke!
