Great hotel, poor breakfast Gorgeous hotel, the reception and dining area has a real wow factor. Staff were friendly. On-site parking is amazing and is reasonably priced at £15.00 for 24hours. Our room was nice, great shower and a very comfortable bed. Mini fridge in room was an added bonus. Breakfast is a buffet style. Ingredients were of a poor quality. I would definitely stay at this hotel again but opt out of breakfast

Tired room We have stayed at this hotel many times, but it really needs better maintenance. Our privilege room had frayed curtains and carpet, which was bubbled up ( a potential trip hazard) and thread bare. The two bed mattresses weren't zipped together properly, so it had an annoying gap between us and the bed nearest the window was really noisy/squeaky every time you moved. The hotel has a good location and staff are welcoming but it needs some tlc.

Slipping standards in recent years My husband and I have stayed at the Southgate Hotel for long weekends at least once, often twice per year for the last 20 years. We love the hotel and over the years have become quite attached to it! In the more distant past we have left 5 star reviews for the hotel. However, I regret to say that in recent years the standards we once enjoyed at the hotel have unfortunately slipped. On two separate stays in recent years we have had no central heating in our room. The first time being a particularly cold weekend and we were supplied with an insufficient portable heater. This time there was a very strong smell of sewage in the room’s bathroom. On arrival there was no smile or welcome from the person at the front desk, just a handover of the card key with no additional information or conversation. On checking out we weren’t asked if we had enjoyed our stay or if everything had been ok. What has happened to the friendly, personable service the hotel used to offer? Such a shame that over the years we have experienced these disappointing changes.

Standards slipping and really need to be addressed We have stayed here a number of times in the past when visiting our daughter at university. Great location close to the cathedral and has good facilities, rooms are of a decent size and there is a wide choice at breakfast. But it is starting to slip in a number of respects: no heated towel rail in our room; tv remote control missing the battery compartment cover. But what is most needed is an improvement in the service quality: the heating controls didn’t work in our first room. We asked the front desk to take a look while we went into town. When we came back 2 hours later - nothing had been done. When we flagged it again we were moved to another room (“there are often heating problems in the downstairs rooms”!). No apology or offer of any discount/free drink despite our having to repack and move ourselves, belongings and dog to a different floor. Then discovered no towels in new room. We requested these from front desk and then got back from dinner to find a few hand towels tossed onto the bed (see photo). Then had to return to front desk to negotiate the provision of a couple of bath towels. So rather a frustrating experience.

Good location, indifferent front desk staff Really disappointed in front desk staff. Arrived after an overseas flight and train with a colleague, and was told there was limited chance of early check-in. One woman informed me that cleaning staff do not even begin until noon which we found surprising, given many people checking out in the mornings in the 8-9 am range. Another time when asking front desk for advice about booking a taxi to train station was abruptly directed to the dedicated taxi phone beside the desk -- no effort to answer a straightforward question. Great location but reception staff really need some customer service skills. Will not be staying again and will advise other business travellers to avoid.
