Beware the Resort Fee This modest hotel has a surprise when you check in. Despite having pre-paid for a room, they charge an extra $25 (or more now) resort fee. You can't avoid the surprise fee. If you've already paid for the room, and don't have another reservation at another hotel, you're screwed. They know that, and it doesn't bother them to manipulate customers and make them unhappy. I'm planning another visit to Hilo. This time I was smart enough to ask in advance about the resort fee. They still don't mention it in their room rate, but then require it upon check-in. So I won't be going to the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel, and you shouldn't either, until they do away with this scam. Just because other hotels might do it doesn't make it right.

Terrific in every phase Excellent service at the desk or restaurant. Comps like free mai tai and bento box for breakfast are appreciated. You might want an extra box to take along as you drive around the area. The oceanfront rooms are a bit more expensive but absolutely worth the upgrade with a great view of the shoreline and bay.

Happy in Hilo Nice hotel in Hilo! I would definitely stay again. Good restaurants in walking distance, close to the airport and a short drive to many of the nearby attractions. Staff was friendly and helpful and restaurant was nice. The view from our room was very pretty!

Good choice in Hilo We always spend a couple of nights in Hilo when visiting the Big Island. This hotel makes a great base for exploring the east side as the island is really too big to comfortably see from Kona side hotels. There are so many great places to see and dtaying in Hilo allows

An okay stay for overnight. We were only there for an overnight stay, so this place was sufficient for that purpose. I was hoping for a "kamaaina" upgrade since the place seemed mostly empty, but nope, no aloha here for anything free, lol. Easy parking in front, and the ocean view (no balcony) room was quite large. There was no fridge, so that was a minus for me because I like to keep my bottled water cold. The room is a tad worn, but not bad. There was plenty of space for hanging our overnight clothes and carry on. The bed was fairly comfortable, but the bedside tables were a bit far from the bed by about at least five inches. So I had to stretch to reach the items left on it. Although the lamp had a plug in for my mobile, I couldn't plug it in so I had to use the standard outlet and leave my mobile on the floor while it charged. We went to the lounge which was okay. The view was beautiful and the drinks were pretty good, but the poke tasted like previously frozen fish so my partner didn't care for it. So overall, it was okay.
