Great Deal At A Great Location Nice and unique place to stay. LACMA and Petersen Museum are basically across the street. Farmers Market is also walking distance. Farmers Market is also walking distance. The nightly rates are very reasonable, and includes parking as well as made-to-order egg breakfast. The interior is a bit dated, but for the nightly rate, you can't beat it (especially if you factor in parking).

Tired, old, indifferent and on auto-pilot This is what it looks like when owners are tired of their business. From the perfunctory and hurried reception (quite different from the tone on the phone before the owners had my deposit), to the indifference toward providing recommendations and meaningful assistance beyond keeping the place functioning, to the dusty and musty furniture, to the racist caricatures in the lounge, apparently amusing c. 1967, this property has all of the hallmarks of a dying business long, long past its prime. Apparently long checked out (one of the owners told me explicitly that he had no interest in the daily running of the business, which has been subcontracted to an earnest and dutiful but overwhelmed subordinate), the owners are clearly assuming that their location will enable them to generate revenue forever without their doing much. The chipped enamel on the tub, the noise unmediated by effective sound-proof windows, the crappy beds, the false claim that the thermostat is controllable by guests, all bespeak indifference and lassitude and, frankly, contempt. A rip-off at half the price, this is a business that should (finally) be taken off of life support. I will certainly never stay here again. It's certainly a reminder that you get what you pay for.

Great Value This place is nothing fancy, but for the price, free parking and breakfast the next morning, it’s a great value for LAX. It was perfect for a one night stay. The lady who prepared our hot breakfast (omelets) and yogurt was very friendly and accommodating. The breakfast was sufficient for two adults. The house certainly has some deferred maintenance and the bathroom was large, but very outdated with a broken tub. I would not spend more than one or two nights here.

Smells pretty bad My wife has allergies to scents used in cleaners and detergents. I contacted the property in advance to find out of they could use unscented products. They assured me that everything was unscented. We arrived on a Friday morning and our room was being cleaned. My wife had an immediate reaction to the smell in the room. The cleaning person assured us that it would be gone on our return. We dropped our bags in the closet and went out for the day. upon return, the room smelled even worse...to the point my wife couldn't breathe. She immediately left the room and I took her elsewhere. Turns out they use some cheap laundry detergent on their sheets and bedding that was causing the reaction...Suavitel Field of Dreams scent. Definitely not an unscented cleaning product as I was told in advance. I contacted hotels.com after the charges came through, they contacted the manager, and they refused to do anything. For a place that is almost 100 years old and has a musty smell about it, i can understand why they want to use scented products for their bedding. However, if they cause health issues, they should be willing to waive the charges. We never stayed here...our bags were stored for about 7 hours in the closet. That's it. I understand cancellation policies, but not being willing to even meet us halfway and refund one of the two nights is appallable behavior.

4 star property with a 1 star bed Excellent place- cute house filled with asian inspired decor, very clean, located on a corner on busy fairfax and easy walking distance to LACMA, La Brea tar pits, and ethiopian restaurants. Stayed one night in the Shangri-la room over the weekend. Room was large and bright with two chairs, dresser, flat screen tv, reading lamps, king size bed, and connects to large bathroom with separate bath and shower. Room was comfortably heated, does smell a bit like cleaning supplies and old house but does have a window that opens to air out if needed. Room came with 2 small bottles of water, shampoo, conditioner, soap, keys to lock the room, and it's own parking space out back (exactly 5 spaces in back so each room has a space) and free breakfast in the morning (which was excellent). My only complaint is the bed. It was absolutely terrible!!! Ultra soft mattress with 0 support topped by a thick mattress topper made for an awkward night of being swallowed by the mattress. To boot- the 4 huge pillows included were equally as marshmellow-like so you couldn't even sit up to watch tv without drowning into the pillows (the headboard is not attached to the bed) so every time you try to sit upright again, the bed would just move forward and your butt would fall out of the bed. My husband and i could not sleep at all in this thing! Also- we slept with our 1.5 year old in the bed as this place does not have cribs and found it a bit dangerous that the headboard while bolted to the wall, was not connected to the bed so every time we tossed and turned in the bed, it would inch away from the headboard creating a large gap and could pose a hazard for young children.
