Great Hotel Mike and Maria were fantastic! We did a one night pre cruise stay. Mike accommodated me above and beyond my expectations. My room wasn’t available as early as the others in my group. He gave me an upgrade with a beautiful view at no extra charge. Totally surprised and grateful. Future trips to the area will send me back to the Penguin hotel just because of the great hospitality.

Stay elsewhere Terrible hotel and service. I’ve stayed in much nicer hotels on south beach for the same cost. There are no parking facilities and my room was not clean . Also don’t bother trying to contact the hotel they don’t reply to emails or answer the phone .

Simple but effective! This is a basic hotel but a solid 3 stars, with a room that is quite small but period correct. Our bathroom was updated, and the air conditioning was loud but effective. We were in 109 which was a corner room overlooking an alley that had loud morning traffic. Our check in was friendly and efficient. We did have our “welcome” drink at Tulum next door, but for breakfast we sat for 15 minutes and never had a server come so walked out when 4 tables seated after us had their orders taken - the restaurant next door had a much larger menu, excellent service and the food was excellent so for the best. The location is great! We walked across the street to the beach and enjoyed that experience. We had some time to kill and hung around in the lobby and porch, great people watching. We didn’t use the pool which was next door, and with the street out front closed drivers have a hard time finding it. For a short stay, I’d go back.

Beware... a confirmed reservation in writing means nothing ZERO stars!! (but I can't post if I don't give a star) I booked 2 rooms this past January (for 3 nights each) and had 2 printed copies of CONFIRMED reservations. I flew my family across the country to be told they "showed" our reservation (but couldn't actually find it), but then claimed the day after they confirmed it (in January) they supposedly sent me an email cancelling. They couldn't show me the canceled email either (because it didn't exist!) They did however, send me a cancellation email the exact same day I was supposed to check in ironically right after they discovered their big oops. I made this reservation well over 6 months ago. Then they claimed my credit card company turned down their attempt at a pre payment and that's why they cancelled. (my ccc said no payment had ever even been attempted at all during the entire 6 months). The manager was obviously embarrassed and apologetic saying it was their fault. My husband then asked how she could rectify the issue and help us get into another location as we where very far from home and unfamiliar with the area. She told us all of their properties were booked. We then asked if we should just basically kick rocks and she shrugged her shoulders and had no further response on the matter. When we were all still in their lobby trying to figure something out and obviously upset about the situation.. the manager excused herself and said she would see what she could do. A few minutes later a new person showed up, who seemed to be some sort of security personnel, looked at the computer, then turned to us and said we have nothing for you. The incompetence and un-professionalism from the manager spoke volumes. At that point we left, discouraged and confused. Luckily, members of our party found us a room close by, but for only 2 nights (as we needed 3, further scrambling to find a place to stay.) We were majorly inconvenienced and they DID NOT CARE! Beware of booking, even having a printed out confirmation means nothing; they might just sell your room to someone else like they did to us... either way I'd recommend looking elsewhere.
