Comfortable, Pleasant, Economical The Econolodge is in an old building that has seen better days. It has sagged and shifted, so floors are out of level and Choice Hotels has had to work hard to keep it nice. But Jay and his family, who manage the place, have made it their priority to make the best of what they have to deal with. The result is very spacious and comfortable clean rooms, a very friendly and accommodating staff, and a better than average continental breakfast, with scrambled and hard boiled eggs and sausage, cereals, bagels, muffins, toast and jelly, instant oatmeal, juice, and coffee. They have fruits as well, and like just about any motel we have stayed at, don't have much for gluten free folks - so hard boiled eggs, coffee and bananas at least makes it so you don't starve. Jay and his family work hard at keeping the place nice, and the price is way better than anywhere else around town. We go to Montpelier every January for a weekend music festival and stay at the Econolodge, and will do so again next year.

Don't Stay Here My wife and I stayed here in October, 2019 during our vacation in Vermont to see the fall colors. Places to stay in this area during "leaf peeping" season are limited and the Econo Lodge was one of the few places that had rooms available. I have to honestly saw this the worst place we've ever stayed that was part of a hotel chain. The entire property was completely filthy and run down. The parking lot was littered and the pavement was broken in many places. The landscape beds were filled with weeds. The Econo Lodge sign on the building was missing with only a bracket and loose wires remaining. The carpet in the hallway looked like it hadn't been vacuumed in months, the floor was uneven and creaky and the desk and dresser in the unit were severely scratched. The picture quality on the TV was so fuzzy as to be almost unwatchable and the room smelled bad. The whole place just gave us the creeps. Was there anything that wasn't terrible? The staff was adequate and seemed to be trying to do a proper job, the bathroom functioned adequately and the breakfast was okay for a hotel of this type although the arrangement and flow of the breakfast room was lousy with no room to move and very little seating. All this for an overpriced $138/night. I wouldn't stay here again if the room was free. The best plan for this property is to bulldoze the place down and build a new hotel run by a company that actually cares about providing a clean, comfortable place for travelers to stay.

Clean and Reasonably priced We were not sure what to expect after reading the reviews, but this place surprisingly alright. It’s older and some outdated, but very clean. We even were pleased with the bathroom because it had a separate counter to use. This made up for no counter near the little sink. It worked well having 2 people doing their makeup at each mirror. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. There is no elevator to go to the 2nd floor, so they offered to carry our heavy suitcase up for us. So nice! The continental breakfast was the basics, coffee, juice, Belgian waffle machine, bagels, toaster, cereal, and few rolls etc. This place provided and did the job that we needed, a place to spend the night safely and comfortably.

Last Option in Montpelier Stayed here during a last minute business trip and the Econolodge was the only hotel convenient to Montpelier that had availability for two rooms. While grateful for the last minute accommodation, we would choose an option further away next time and stomach the travel time instead of staying here. Check-in was easy and the staff were pleasant. The rooms and property as a whole however, left everything to be desired. While boasting a "smoke free property" the entire hallway to our rooms (201 & 202) had an overwhelming and pervasive smell of cigarettes. The hotel as a whole has certainly seen a rough past, with seedy elements showing everywhere around the new-ish veneer provided by the Choice hotel group to make it meet brand standards. Everything seemed as clean as you could make rooms and a property that should have been retired and razed a while ago. The sheets and pillow covers seemed to be laundered regularly, however the blankets, bedding covers, and mattress when exposed were suspect, musty, and needed replacement or at least a wash. Closer inspection of the sheets showed residue of stains there attempted to be bleached away with partial success. Most alarming however, was waking up with a myriad of bites on my skin from my single night stay. I'm hesitant to proclaim "BEDBUGS" as inspected the entire room thoroughly when I woke up - mattress, frame, headboard, blankets, walls around the bed, etc. I don't have experience with bed bugs and don't have a trained eye for them, so I didn't spot any definitive evidence of the culprit. I did however sleep in the bed fully covered in socks, sweatpants, and a long sleeve tshirt so as to limit my skin exposure if I was to be staying in this room for a night - and the bites were all along my sweatpants waistband in a line as they say bed bugs will tend to bite. Maybe it was a spider? Other parts of the room - there was a new tv in the room that was relatively useless with hardly any channels available. The iron worked, but the ironing board was a wreck. Towels in the bathroom smelled clean - but were extremely tired. The wifi was unreliable to the point that I just resorted to using my own hotspot instead of their internet. It was a rough night and I do admire the family running the hotel doing the best with what was there, however I would not recommend staying here if you can avoid it - esp considering our rate at $130/night per room could have gotten us a better, cleaner location about ten miles away. Did not eat the breakfast offered in the morning - so I can't speak to that aspect, but the state of the property as a whole didn't inspire me to seek anything more from the property then a room for the night.
