Excellent location Stayed here on a family trip to Montreal in July 2021. Hotel not yet at 100% operations due to COVID, but close.
Room:
We had room 1003 (last floor with rooms). The room was excellent and lots of storage space. No complaints about the room.
The bathroom has a bathtub with a bath mat and lots of towels of all sizes. Lots of amenities provided including shower cap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, bath gel, and hair dryer.
Our room had one Queen bed and a double sized sofa bed. The Queen bed was separated by a wall from the rest of the room, but not closed off completely. It was comfortable and had plenty of pillows. For storage the bedroom had a closet with lots of hangers and a dresser. Also a TV. The living area had the sofa bed, another larger closet with a safe, desk and chair, TV on top of a dresser. So no complaints about storage, plenty of drawers and hangers. Window view wasn't particularly great, just looking down onto a street below at the front of the hotel.
The dining area had a table and four chairs, and a well equipped kitchen with lots of cabinets, a stove, fridge, toaster, kettle, coffee maker, sink, microwave, and dishwasher. In the cupboards and drawers there were plates, cutlery, bowls, and glasses. Perfect for cooking your own meals if you wanted.
Food
The breakfast room is currently closed to dining, it's take out only and you have to take your food back to your room. However it is a free breakfast and that is a good value. Whenever we went (before 9AM) there were no long lines at all, maybe at most a few people in front. They do say after 9AM it gets busier though. The breakfast room is open from 6:30-9:30AM on weekdays and 7:30-10AM on weekends. They ask for one person per family to go but our family of 3 went together and nobody ever said anything. The menu is only continental breakfast options so don't expect hot items like pancakes, waffles, bacon and eggs, sausages, etc. Your bread is given to you cold and you can toast it back in your room. Here is what they had: fruit salad, apples, oranges, yogurt (assorted flavours), cheese, sliced bread (white, multigrain or raisin), bagels, banana bread slices, and instant oatmeal packets (regular or maple), plus spreads like butter, peanut butter, margarine, jam (strawberry, raspberry), honey, and cream cheese. For drinks they have coffee, tea (black, green, herbal), and orange juice. Despite the menu saying so they never had milk or apple juice when we went. Unfortunately they didn't have cereals either which would have been nice to get those little boxes of assorted cereals.
Parking
Parking is valet only at $25/day. Half of the street in front of the hotel is currently closed due to construction. My main complaint here why the hotel didn't get 5 stars is that the valet once took half an hour to get our car. He said they have a second lot at a nearby location and he had to go get it there. It was frustrating having to wait that long and a good thing we didn't have anywhere to be in particular that morning, otherwise it would have been too much of a delay.
Pool
The pool is a small, rectangular indoor lap pool on the last floor of the hotel. Fortunately it's heated so didn't take long at all to get used to the water temperature. Currently they allow only 10 people at a time and you have to book your time the same day in advance. You also need a pool key card to get in, which I was never told, so we got to the pool thinking we just needed our room key card and then had to go back down to the lobby to get the pool card. The hours are also confusing, we went at 7:30PM and were told we could only stay 1/2 hour and the sign on the pool deck says the pool closes at 8PM. However elsewhere it says the pool is open until 10PM and we went up to it later that night and there were people swimming in it. There is a small gym adjacent to the pool separated by glass, and an outdoor terrace around it with some lounge chairs and a nice view of the skyline.
Location
The location is excellent except now it's not at its best as there is a lot of construction. They are building a condo looks like right next to the hotel and the street is half closed. The Square Phillips is also all ripped up now save for a lone statue in the middle but absolutely no green space, so unfortunately what would have been a nice place to relax isn't available. But there are LOTS of eating options and shops nearby on Rue Ste. Catherine which is lined with restaurants and a very lively scene on Fridays-Sundays when it's closed for pedestrian traffic only, lots of crowds, music, and people watching. A block from the hotel on Union Street there are a few good priced restaurants we ate at, including Mexican (Escondite), Chinese (Les Patates Vivantes), and a Kinton Ramen which we didn't eat at and a Cuban restaurant which we would have liked to eat at but it was temporarily closed (La Habanera). There is also a Tim Hortons on one corner and a Burger King on another corner. The Eaton Centre (large mall) is just a 5 minute walk away. There are a couple of pretty old churches on Ste. Catherine too. About 10 minutes walk away you can see the gorgeous huge church Mary Queen of the World and lively Dorchester Square urban park (fun fact, this used to be an old cemetery under which there are still thousands of bodies buried). You can also walk down to Old Montreal in 20 minutes. Overall, it's an excellent location.
I rated it 4 "stars" for an excellent room and location but "just" a good breakfast and valet service. Overall though I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone visiting Montreal. Hopefully one day in the future if we return everything will be back to normal, there won't be construction all around, the breakfast room will be dine-in and fully operational, the Phillips Square will be redone, and all will be perfect.
