Great family vacation in Newport I will be honest, when I was reading the recent reviews leading up to our vacation last week (July 19-22) I was feeling high anxiety and regret. The negativity around the staff and the property had me thinking we were going to be staying in some dingy hellscape with paint peeling on the walls and angry staff members unwilling to assist. I was thinking of cancelling and eating the fees. I am glad I didn't. I can only speak for my experience, and while some of those reviews may have set my expectations quite low, even if they hadn't I would have been equally satisfied with our stay. Newport is an expensive town and not many places with a pool on property. We were a family of 4, with our two kids being under 5. We had a room with a balcony which actually had some incredible views of the bay. We were on the third floor, room 3311, with two queen beds. The room was clean and comfortable with an empty mini-fridge (which was a nice surprise since with kids you always have random drinks and food). The balcony was basic but served its purpose. We found the hotel location to be really great as we could walk across the bridge and be to the main dock and shops within 20 minutes. We did the walk multiple times with a double stroller with sidewalks from start to finish. We loved the pool, again, nothing fancy, but refreshing and great for the kids. Overall, we had a great trip. The property is a little dated, but certainly won't effect your stay. Recommend.

Don’t stay here Terrible customer service. Staff isn’t overly friendly which isn’t great considering that’s a big part of their job. Took multiple reminders and calls for sheets/pillows that should’ve already been on pull out couch. Reserved rollaway bed weeks in advance which not only wasn’t in the room, not huge deal, but also after 4 add’l reminders upon check in, still took several hours to receive. And zero apologies. I can’t even with this place.

Hotel rooms need updating Positive: The hotel grounds are beautiful and the staff was helpful and accommodating. At night you can sit by the fire pits, it was very relaxing. Sadly the restaurant Scarpetta is still closed so the only other fine dining option is Showfish. The menu is limited but the food was excellent and the servers/cooks took care of my food allergies. Negative: The hotel rooms need major updating. For $700 a night it wasn’t worth it and was very outdated. Our room had paint peeling off the walls. The bathroom lighting was horrible and there was mold in the shower, and the grout was dirty. (Disgusting) The coffee shop at the hotel closes very early so if you need coffee and a soft drink/snack you’re out of luck. You will have better accommodations at the Marriott hotel or at a bed and breakfast.

Not worth it My sisters and I just stayed here for 2 nights, after having spent a few nights in CT (Foxwoods) as part of a 1 week trip to celebrate my birthday. First and foremost, based on the descriptions online and the cost ($1300+ for 2 nights), I was expecting more; I have certainly paid less and received more luxurious accommodations elsewhere. What you’re paying for here is mostly a convenient location near the city and local beaches rather than true luxury. The pillows and robes were the only things that truly impressed me; they were exceptionally comfortable! Upon checking in, one of the lights was out in the bathroom. I dismissed that and didn’t bother to complain. When we realized there was no microwave in the room, we went down and asked for one. They agreed to bring one up, so we went out to the beach and came back hours later to find there was still no microwave in our room. We had to ask again before they finally brought one to us. While deciding what to do that first night, my sister called the front desk to ask for suggestions. While she was on the phone, we were teasing her and laughing, so she was giggling a little. The woman speaking with her got annoyed and passed the phone to someone else. The second woman was very short with her then hung up before she could finish asking a follow up question. It was incredibly rude and my sister was upset about it for the rest of the trip. The gym was great, the indoor and outdoor pools were good (comfortable chairs, big towels, water not too cold), the restaurant had limited food options, but what we ordered was good and our server was great. Every last drink we ordered however was weak and overpriced. My mojito tasted like straight seltzer water with some mint at the bottom. When I asked for a round of long island iced teas, they all tasted like weak $3 rum and cokes, but were $16.50 each. Can’t tell if they simply use mostly fillers for all their drinks, if they water down their bottles of alcohol or if they used a combination thereof. My sister and I are in our 20s and 30’s and we noticed that the majority of others staying here were much older. Maybe they’re just used to making weaker drinks for seniors. We’ll never know. I called several times before or stay to try to book something at their spa, which was one of the main reasons I chose Gurney’s; I wanted a deep tissue massage for my birthday. However, they said they were fully booked for all 3 days each time I asked. During my stay, when I asked to use the steam room or sauna, they said it was inside the spa and only for those receiving spa services. So I stopped by and tried to book pedicures for us, and use the sauna, but again they told me they were booked, so no. The last night we stayed was the day before my birthday. Since I refused to buy any more drinks at the bar but wasn’t quite in the mood to go out into town, we decided to just stay in the hotel room and play card games. We asked for an extra chair for the room to accommodate us sitting around the small coffee table, and they said no - they didn’t have one. So a resort [with a conference center] didn’t have 1 chair to spare after hours, on a Wednesday night??? The kicker: at 11:30pm, right before midnight, a staff member knocked on our door and told us to keep it down because the walls are “paper thin.” We were in shock! We were just casually talking and laughing - no music, no screaming - and it was the culmination of a 1 week trip ending on my actual birthday, only to be told to be quiet. It put a huge damper on the night, which was supposed to be all about celebration. Looking back, I definitely did not get my money’s worth. If I wanted to use a decent pool and sauna, I could have just spent the day at my regular gym. If I wanted to sleep in a place with paper thin walls, I would just stay at a motel. If I wanted to get a spa treatment during my stay, I definitely should have booked elsewhere; there’s no point in listing that as an amenity if it’s not actually available. I just didn’t see the value is staying here. So, I wouldn’t recommend this place unless it were $200/night or less, you’re at least a few decades older and you just want a place to sleep without any cause for celebration.
