Good location/great views Rooms are nice with some quirks. The bathroom sliding doors are hard to open when fully closed. There was only one place to hang a towel. If you have two, you're out of luck. There was no closet or clothes hangers. If you have a suit or jacket you'd like to hang up, you're out of luck. As is often the case in hotels, the power outlets are not conveniently located. Wifi is available without login password, which is nice. Bed was comfortable. As with many hotels, the lighting was hard to figure out, but worked okay once we had the hang of it. The views from the 10th floor of the ships in the harbor was drop-dead spectacular. Room cleaning was only once every three days. Not good for a hotel of this price. In general, there did not seem to be enough staff while we were there. The hotel was quite full, but there were clearly not enough wait staff in the bar/restaurant. However, the waitresses I encountered were doing their best and were very nice. Parking is convenient. The ferry to downtown Norfolk is close by and we had a great time one evening crossing over for dinner. Despite my small complaints, this is a good hotel and I would definitely stay there again.

Comfortable stay during wedding event We stayed two nights there to attend wedding event and we reserved using the link provided in the wedding invite. At check-in the staff did not identify my reservation linked to the wedding event. The wedding hosts had kept some giftbags to be given to all guests and I would not have received it but for my daughter who was checking on next to me asked the staff if the bags were to be given to all attending wedding. Then the staff handed the bag and waters kept for all the wedding guests. We were on the 14th floor, decent spacious room with 2 beds. Nice views of the water, boardwalk, the massive ship on the water, the Portsmouth sign on the boat lighthouse next to the hotel. Our bathroom had a few issues: sink would not drain properly (standing water); the barn door type sliding door was not gliding smoothly and it was hard to operate. We did not report the issues. Hotel has very nice ambience with nice walking path along water. Overall comfortable stay.

Overpriced and underwhelming We needed a hotel close to the Portsmouth waterfront to visit family in the area. This was the only decent hotel with rooms available for our dates. I thought the price (over $300 per night) was a bit high but didn't have a choice. When I found this was part of the Marriott family I figured the price might be work it. I reserved a king room with water view. I had been told that the hotel has been refurbishing guest rooms so I specified one that had already been done. The first problem is the lay out of this hotel has the main desk a long distance from the main entrance. It seemed like we walked half a city block to get there. And the guest elevator is another long walk from there. When we finally got to our room we found it very poorly furnished. There was a long table in front the the windows with a single desk chair. That was it! No side chair of any kind. So to relax with a drink and snack after a day of driving one my wife sat in the chair while I sat on the end of the bed. Lighting was also a problem. There was a single floor lamp on one side of the room near the table with a metal shade that focused the light in a narrow spot. I had to move our suitcases rack right under the lamp to find our clothes in the evening. The only reading lamps were a small spot light in the headboard on each side of the bed, so the only way to relax and read a book or newspaper was by getting in bed! The shower was another big disappointment - the control handle was nearly impossible to adjust for a comfortable temperature. It was either scalding hot or freezing cold. The only positive feature was a comfortable king bed and good pillows. But overall it was a huge disappointment. We've had better accommodations at 2.5 and 3 star hotels. We won't be returning although we will undoubtedly be visiting family in the area in the future.

Not a Good Representation of Marriott Properties I was not at all impressed with this hotel. They are renovating, so I gave them a pass for the old smell when I entered the hotel. The floor we were on was renovated, so it was really nice. But, I went to get ice in my night gown and got locked out of my room because my mobile key wouldn’t work, the front desk would not answer the phone, so I had to go from the 9th floor to the receptionist for another key. The fridge was off and when we turned it on it never got cold. And on top of all of this, whenever we had to shower we had to let the water run for 15 minutes for it to get hot, then when it got hot there was no in between it was either freezing cold or scalding hot. I called the Marriott 800 number since the front desk still wasn’t answering and they didn’t get an answer either. When I spoke with the spoke the receptionist on the daytime shift they offered no apology, just a replacement key. I dropped something under the dresser and when I picked it up, it was covered in dust and hair…

Fabulous Stay Not sure why we haven't visited Portsmouth before now but we are so glad we did! What a lovely historic town! We love staying at Marriott hotels for all our trips and the Renaissance Portsmouth did not disappoint. True, they are remodeling and we were forewarned of this fact so we could be prepared. Shena Brooks emailed me prior to our stay and communicated with us regularly on any needs and gathering tourist information for our visit. Upon our arrival in mid-April she immediately recognized me and set in to make sure we were comfortable and well taken care of. Keith was another fabulous front-desk attendant, funny and well versed in top notch customer service. While exploring the town, we heard from several people on how they love the new paint job on the outside of the building. Our room was spacious and clean with a killer view of Norfolk and the Elizabeth River. Our room needed a good paint job to go with the new furniture but I assume the hotel is getting around to that with the renovations. We will definitely stay again and can't wait to see the finished remodel. Thanks for making our weekend great.
