Great time for a birthday celebration The Barcelo Bavaro beach is a wonderful resort. If you are adults I would suggest stay here because the Palace is busy with families and children, big lines, etc however you can use any of the facilities over there by taking a fun mini train which comes every 10 minutes. Staff at the Barcelo Bavaro tried their best to accommodate at al la cartes, and whenever there was some issue. Evelyn R was very helpful. The Chez Gourmet was an excellent fine dining restaurant with excellent food and service. The buffet was by far the best buffet I have had, and I have travelled extensively around caribbean, and to many all inclusive resorts. (lets not compare to high end carribean islands or resorts) the staff serving worked hard and were always available. The only problem we encountered was the house cleaning was late and sometimes not enough towels. Perhaps saving water and trying to be mindful of environment. Lastly the bartender Angel at the main lobby was exceptional in making drinks. Thank you for a wonderful visit from your canadian friends.

Truly, deeply terrible AWFUL. This resort was astonishingly bad. Service: Terrible. We place 2 room service orders. The first just never came (after 3 follow up calls). The second came 80 minutes after ordering (and 4 follow up calls). When we arrived, we were chaotically led around before landing at the "premium" check in desk. The staff was rude and dismissive. (Ex: When I asked about scheduling a massage, the employee dialed the spa and then just thrust the phone into my hand for me to speak to them.) They provided no map or guide or any relevant or helpful information for figuring out where things are, how to arrange reservations, etc. Food: Honestly the worst food I've eaten at any restaurant or resort. Ever. We attempted to make reservations for the "restaurants," but when we showed up, there were dozens of people standing outside, no host or staff, and visible chaos inside. The buffets we ended up eating at (out of desperation) were, as my boyfriend put it, "truly vile." The "Beach" resort included access to the restaurants in the neighboring "Palace" resort. Every item of food that we attempted to eat or observed on others' plates was deeply gross. When we did finally get one room service order, it was like a practical joke. Rancid salad, Velveeta cheese on the "cheese plate" (literally, Velveeta, the taste is unmistakable), and a lump of what looked and tasted like stale vanilla pudding offered as "cheesecake." I want to note, I'm not at all a picky eater. I'll find something that's fine at almost any restaurant, café, gas station, or drive-thru. This is NOT the review of a "foodie," just a human with taste buds. Room: We paid extra for an ocean view "premium" room. So...this is billed as the 2nd best room they have. It was so depressingly bad. First, the A/C managed to keep the room juuuust below outside temp. The room hung out around 85° consistently. I asked for the a/c to be checked, and it supposedly was working "fine"? The room itself was rundown, in disrepair, and not clean. Old chipped and putted tile floors with missing grout. Sloppy paint on the walls and ceilings (overlapping on fixtures, trim, floor, etc). The ceiling in the bathroom looked moments away from crumbling with appatent water damage. Worn linens. Flat, heavy pillows. Nasty wicker furniture with filthy cushions. Bars: We got margaritas at the "pool bar" once. It was staffed with one person, so we waited in a line of 8 people to get one terrible drink. Service and drinks at the "sports bar" were absolutely terrible. Truly, this was the worst experience I've ever had on vacation, by far. It did not at all feel like a vacation because everything was so terrible and stressful. The times I tried to call the front desk or "premium" concierge, it either rang endlessly with no answer or (on 2 occasions) was answered by a person who sounded like they were on a school bus full of middle schoolers (loud yelling, screaming, laughing in the background so that i couldn't hear anything and neither could the employee answering the phone). We could not get out of this cesspool fast enough.
