Lovely historic hotel worth staying at The St. James is located in downtown Red Wing, a block from the Mississippi River, a half block from the Amtrak station. We stayed 2 nights in September 2024, part of a birthday trip celebration for me. Our room on the 4th floor of the original hotel was beautifully restored to most modern conveniences, while retaining its historic charm and significance. It had a great view of the Mississippi River at its big bend. The hotel was clean and seemed very well maintained. Plenty of free parking, covered and uncovered (you can choose) right next to the hotel (direct entrance from parking ramp). Staff was very friendly. The room was spacious, the bed was quite comfortable (though my wife wished for a firmer mattress, I found the support good). Linens above average. A few negatives, which may or may not matter to a given person: along with the beautiful view, the half block to the Amtrak station means you are a half block from the railroad; this Canadian Pacific main line has freight trains running occasionally through the night, and they blow for a crossing near the hotel, so if that would bother you, opt for a room not facing the river. Note: this is an issue all up and down the upper midwest part of the Mississippi, since in most areas railroads run down both sides of the river. Inside, however, the hotel itself was very quiet. The historic nature of the hotel means bathrooms may be smaller than you're used to (ours was), closet space limited, and electrical connections not up to the contemporary standard (in our room the hotel had an outlet dock plugged in). Floors are uneven, some slope a bit, and closet space is limited (our room had a wardrobe). No fridges or microwaves (there is a coffee maker in the room). None of these spoiled our stay; we like staying in historic properties, and the history of this beautifully preserved hotel is amply displayed on placards hung throughout.

Lovely and Charming Hotel We have stayed at the St. James Hotel many times and have always had a great experience. The hotel is nearly 150 years old and has old world charm that we enjoy. The rooms can be a bit dated, but they are clean and comfortable. The staff are always friendly and helpful, and the restaurant and bars are very good. We love the Red Wing area for hiking, biking, golf, kayaking, and theater (the Sheldon Theater is wonderful). The St. James Hotel offers elegance and comfort.

Long weekend in Redwing Broken sleep from trains screaming by, no place to hang dresses in the junior riverside suite, no real view of the river in same, and no full length mirror in room. Now the room WAS sparkling clean and the bed was super comfortable!

Lovely Historic Hotel The hotel was rich with history but has been updated. It was situated on the River and the farmer's market was right outside the doors. Shops and restaurants were within walking distance. Beds were very comfortable. Staff was friendly and helpful. We would recommend this hotel to everyone!
