Avoid this property - do not stay Overall property is 5/10 for a Holiday Inn Express standard. Plenty of things not functioning in the room and had to call maintenance 4 times within 3 hours after checking in for many things such as sink clogged, light bulb not working, toilet seat coming off, flush not working properly, room properly not cleaned with hair of previous guests and has terrible allergy, etc. Housekeeping walks into room multiple times waking us up while we're sleeping with DND on door and then waking us up. Continuing this throughout our stay and disregarding DND sign and knocking multiple times. First day when we checked in, there was no water in the room and Guest services lady comes to give us water and doubts that there was water in the room, quite insulting experience as a Ambassador Platinum Elite IHG member. No recognition for platinum elite members and you've to really hustle to get an upgrade or even ask for welcome points. Lastly, the GM of this hotel Stephanie Downs is the most grumpy, unfriendly, rude and unhelpful manager in the hospitality industry and doesn't care if you're a loyal IHG customer or about the customer's quality of stay and overall satisfaction. It shows why the hotel is such badly managed and maintained with most of the staff not properly trained. Only 2 good things about this hotel. Ulysses the front office manager has been super helpful and friendly with a smile on his face and willing to try his best to help customers. He's the reason we still decided to extend our stay in this property! He offered to give us other rooms and showed us a couple of options of other rooms. Genuine empathy for customers and we appreciated his gesture. Complimentary breakfast was good although we had it only once. But noticed that they stopped refilling food 30 mins before the buffet closes. Of course this is no Intercontinental or Kimpton but lacks basic services, maintainance and etiquettes. If you don't have any expectations and want a little better place than a hostel then stay here but if you're expecting a reasonable service from a IHG hotel, then please stay elsewhere. Plenty of better hotel options in downtown San Diego!

Solid and budget friendly but a few snags This hotel was a good choice for many reasons, but also has some drawbacks. My family and I stayed for 6 nights in March. We secured two rooms. My room (shared with my daughter) was on the top floor (as requested) but my sons' room was on the mezzanine level 1, which wasn't ideal. Their room was a generous size, but they couldn't open a window. They opened the curtains upon arrival, and right outside was a homeless person smoking. Hence they had to keep the windows closed the whole time and couldn't have fresh air. I'm not sure why they weren't on the top floor as rooms on either side of me were empty; however they said it wasn't worth the trouble to argue at the front desk and they accepted it. My room was on the smaller size; it was very clean. The pillows were the best - I'd like to know where to order some! However my bed sloped to one side - it was quite obvious but I managed and did sleep quite well. The most bothersome thing was the bathroom lighting. The automatic light would come on at all hours at the slightest vibration - but it would turn off during a shower, plunging the room into darkness. This is dangerous in itself, especially with the heavy glass sliding doors. Preparing to step of the tub and opening the shower door would trigger the light back on. Despite this, we dealt with it and advised the front desk upon check-out. Housekeeping is every 2nd day which is nice. The breakfast was top form prepped and maintained by some of the hardest working people who take pride in working there. The ice water in the hotel lobby was appreciated as was the hot water for tea, plus coffee. The hotel is on a steep corner. Be aware if you have mobility issues. It's a solid 30 minute walk to the Seaport Village area. Taxis can over-charge; we paid $20 (including tip) for 4 to go to Balboa Park. Uber was about $10. I suggest Uber for the airport too - we paid $40 for a shuttle for a ride to the hotel upon arrival; an Uber on the return was $25; the driver had a mini-van and could accommodate all of us plus luggage. I would certainly stay here again. Thank you, Holiday Inn Express Downtown San Diego, for helping us enjoy our first trip to your beautiful city.

Better Stay Than Expecting Typically not a huge Holiday Inn Express fan, but I really enjoyed my stay. Angel at the front desk was super helpful and awesome. Our room was clean, the beds comfortable for the hotel category. They stored out luggage for us after we checked out of our room, since we had a later flight, which was super awesome. Hotel breakfasts are never impressive, this property was pretty good as far as breakfasts go. Elevators can be a bit slow at times. I would definitely stay at this location again. The property seems pretty good for families too.

Not a good experience I’m not the one to really write reviews on hotels. I’m okay with understanding that not every hotel can meet my expectations and meet every check mark. However, this hotel had so many red flags. The bathrooms are ridiculously small and we’re not properly sanitized. Tub had some markings and there were cracks on the wall. Initially the knob on the bathroom was loose and when taking a shower, it completely fell off. It was fixed and put back on. Vending machines also barely worked. The only positive experience was the staff. They were welcoming and always friendly. Breakfast was average but had all the basics. The rooms are outdated.
