Value for money We stayed here for a night. The hotel itself is very olde worlde, creaking floorboards and old beams. It could do with a bit of a makeover, especially the bathroom which did look a bit tired. The breakfast was very good , with plenty of choice and all staff were very friendly.Car park is 15 pound per night.

Poorly run hotel. There where a number of issues which may have been related to shortage of staff, or poorly motivated staff. Shower in one room and toilet in another not working properly. Dirty crockery piled in a corridor most of one day and overnight. Reception staff unfriendly.

Old world charm This hotel is the real deal. It is old and creaky and full of Tudor charm. It is centrally located for everything that you want to do around town, within walking distance of the train station and all the touristy spots. The room and bed were comfortable and a decent size. It does need a bit of sprucing up, but all in all I enjoyed my stay here.

Definitely saw a spook. After reading the reviews I was quite apprehensive about staying here. My partner had booked this hotel for my birthday and we were just staying the one night. We arrived quite early as we wanted a walk around before checking in. Surprisingly we did actually get parked - I suppose we were lucky! The car park is quite tight and would probably hold around 20 cars at most. So I would either book a spot (if you can) or book a spot at the local NCP in advance. Lovely large entrance with plenty of places to sit. I felt it a bit of a waste of space? Maybe something else to utilise the space better.. But we were greeted at the reception by Tristan and Sam. Absolutely lovely gents! We were told the history of the building and local places to visit. We checked in to our room which was up a flight of stairs (I'm not sure if there is a lift, if you struggle with stairs). Room was ok, and looked over the car park - suppose it would be more quiet that the road side as the windows can't be updated being such an old building. Floors weren't even and neither was the ceiling but that's the charm, that's history and that's the building - and it was awesome. When we were out and about someone had said to us the hotel may be closing before Xmas for a refurb, which I would say it needs it. The walls and windows being wonky is part of the charm and character. The stained carpets, headboard and shower floor is not. Bar was well stocked and the lad serving was lovely.. and had great hair! I definitely saw a ghost in my room, don't care what anyone says! All in all, I would stay again but after the refurb. Staff are lovely, location is brilliant, car park isn't great and nor are the carpets.

Dated and poor value for money Hotel is outdated. Beautiful building but rooms are musty, poor ventilation. Bed far too soft. No water left in room and didn't want to risk drinking from the cold tap as everything seems so dated. Not seen a lick of paint in a long time, lots of scuffs and scratches. Went for a drink in the bar at 6.30pm but it was not open. Rooms need refurbishing. Floorboards very squeaky so you hear everyone that walks past your room or in the room above. No plug socket by the side of the bed
