The hotel is not a handicapped accessible The doors to the restroom is not automatic, you have to pull or push the door , no beach wheelchair available on site, you have to rent it from a third party. The night entertainment were boring, no live band or music by the beach at night. Lack of signage for location of elevator, it's difficult to go back and forth in the hallway looking for it especially if you are pushing a wheelchair. The check in process was very slow, it took 2 hrs, there's only 1 staff helping 13 of us to check in, also, on time of booking I requested to have the 4 rooms next to each other and informed the resort we have a handicapped person with us, upon checking in we was assigned to different floors, they tried to separate the rest of my family from us.

Need more customer service and honor the room that people pay for. Those people that works at the buffet need more training. More kindness. I brought money to tip and they was just doing a job all the time I had to ask for a simple cup of water. The didn’t give to me. Never asked me is I need something.

Bad service and food, very disappointing Worst all-inclusive resort I’ve been to. Based on reviews and recommendations our family of 15 (5 rooms) decided to stay at Barcelo Caribe. Upon checkin, the service was unacceptable. They moved our room specifically to Barcelo Beach without any communication, away from the rest of my family due to our original suite at Caribe being unavailable due to repairs. Checkin process took more than an hour, after already having a full day of travel. On top of that our room was not ready at 8p at night so we decided to get fuel at the buffet to wait. The food was HORRIBLE. That was Day 1, and the quality of the food and service pretty much maintained poor status throughout the rest of our 4 day trip. A few other things to mention - they could not accommodate our family for any reservations although we paid for the premier level, which meant we had to settle for poor buffet food the entire time. We did not have tacos (in Mexico) even once!! Most places that had coffee only had it available via machine. The facilities were large across 4 hotels. But for most kids things, we had to pay extra (at an all inclusive hotel) such as water slides, bowling, miniature golf, go karting. The general response we would get from any staff would be to check back tomorrow morning. No thank you!!! We are on vacation and didn’t want to waste any more time in lines waiting for bad service only to be told to come back again to be told that they could not accommodate. The overall consensus from my whole family was that luckily we had good company, outside of that the food and service were way below expectations, even after paying premium prices. We will not be returning back to Barcelo.

SKIP AT ALL COSTS Absolute garbage service, never go here. They let you wait hours after check in time saying the room is not ready. Check in lobby is dirty and restaurants are Las Vegas style (tv's everywhere and noisy)...........................................................

Dissapointing - We just returned from our family vacation in the Barcelo Maya Caribe (part of the Barcelo complex of 6 hotels), July 2024. The hotel was disappointing.
Problems:
- Check in was incredibly slow and took an hour, which feels worse after hours of traveling (and with kids).
- We upgraded the bracelet to premium (a recommendation of my friend), as it supposedly got you better service, drinks, etc. Well, immediately after checking in, we went to the premium lobby (in from tof the main lobby) to make our restaurant reservations (restaurants only open at night). Well, they could not get us a reservation for the first 3 days of the vacation (out of 6 full days on property). Apparently, the reservations were full, but how can somebody that just check in compete against those that have been there and made reservations? What is the point of having premium if it won't guarantee you a spot? It would end up feeling like $700 wasted, later on.
- Biggest problem was probably the food. The food in the buffets by the beach was not good, and those are the only options when you are by the beach during the day. In fact on the third to last day, my oldest son (11) got food poisoning and spent the next 24 hours with stomach issues and vomiting. The main buffet (not by the beach) was ok, the breakfasts were good, lunches and diners so so.
- The actual restaurants were ok/decent (Spanish, Japanese and Italian).
- The room: just not all that, and the restroom had this weird half-wall that divided the toilet from the rest of the restroom. So in essence if you were siting in the toilet, you had no privacy from the rest of the restroom. Fun view, when your son is having to use it all night. Additionally, the fire alarm went off 2 nights in a row, in the middle of the night for a longish period of time, multiple times.
- Drinks were ok, nothing to brag. If you wanted something better (wine or liquor) you had to pay for it (again what's the point of Premium?).
- We hadn't been to the Riviera Maya since we got married in 2011, and prices had increased significantly. It was very noticeable.
Positives:
- The beach was amazing. Green and blue, with great sand (a bit rough if you want to build a sand castle). Definitely the selling point. The pools were nice and the kids loved that part.
- My wife enjoyed the gym, and we used the Spa once.
- I wonder if it instead of wasting the money on the premium bracelet it would have been better to move to the Barcelo Palace (their luxury).
